Streak Tests and ID’ing Rocks & Minerals

SUCH a busy, productive science class – whoot!  We’ve been studying the different properties of rocks and minerals over the last several days, and today we continued on with doing streak tests.  We learned about what a streak test is and why they are important, and then students got to perform their own streak tests on samples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. All of this learning about rock and mineral properties led us to understanding how we can identify rocks and minerals.  Students were directed to THIS website to discover the properties of several “mystery minerals”, and recorded their findings on their own charts.  They used their information to to decide what each “mystery mineral” was.  Excellent work today, 3Js!
