Visualization – A Comprehension Strategy

There are many strategies that good readers use, and VISUALIZATION is a very effective one.  Today we practiced this comprehension strategy.  Ms.J read the book On Halloween Night by Harriet Ziefert; Emily’s Halloween outfit is slowly revealed as the book progresses.  Each student was given time to stop and make a mental image of what the outfit looked like at different parts of the story.  The story pictures were hidden from the class so that the students had to activate the “little tv screens” in their heads – their mental images.  This can be a difficult skill if it does not come naturally, but everybody did a really good job!  This is a strategy that students should be using as they are reading their books to themselves or with others.
